Abstract
Hematophagy is a life style exhibited by approximate to 14,000 species of i nsects from 5 orders, but detailed physiological information is available f or only a few species. This review focuses on 2 well-studied insects, Rhodn ius prolixus Stal an obligatory hematophage, and Aedes aegypti (L.), an opt ional hematophage. Emphasis is placed on hormones that are released after b lood-feeding that stimulate diuresis, molting, and reproduction. Even thoug h these 2 insects have been studied since the 1930s, many areas of research are still unexplored. The review and extensive reference list will be bene ficial for researchers working with predacious Hemiptera and protein-feedin g Diptera.
