Acute liver failure represents one of the most challenging conditions in ga
stroenterology. In most cases, there is no effective therapy making support
ive intensive care the most important management tool. These patients frequ
ently develop multi-organ failure, placing them at risk of systemic infecti
ons, cerebral edema, hemodynamic instability, coagulopathy and various rena
l and metabolic complications. Successful management of the patient: with a
cute liver failure requires an understanding of the pathophysiology and man
agement of these complications. An overview of acute liver failure and its
most common complications is presented.
