Abstract
The goal of this pilot study was to determine the effects of phenytoin on c ocaine self-administration in a human laboratory model. Subjects were rando mized to either phenytoin (n = 6) or placebo (n = 7). Those assigned to phe nytoin treatment received a single oral loading dose of 20 mg/kg. The pheny toin and placebo treatment groups did not differ in the number of tokens, v alued at $5, exchanged for cocaine. Similarly, the cardiovascular and subje ctive response to cocaine administration did not show a statistically signi ficant treatment effect. In this laboratory model, phenytoin did not alter either the self-administration or effects of cocaine. (C) 1999 Elsevier Sci ence Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.
