What emerged from the 23 stimulating papers presented at a conference on 'T
he World of Indian Industrial Labour' at Amsterdam was the enormous complex
ity and variety, the many worlds, of industrial labour. But these separate
worlds cure not unconnected, they are closely joined by the dynamics of per
vasive trends, especially liberalisation, deregulation and casualisation. T
hrough the many questions raised, the conference implicitly sketched an age
nda for further research.
