ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATIONS IN JAPAN PART II-ELECTRONICS
By using a directional screen in which the displayed image varies according
to the viewing angle, a display technique for bidirectional video communic
ation is realized in which a natural feeling of conversation at the same lo
cation can be obtained. The technology used to control the visual area of t
he displayed image is different from that for a large screen and that for a
high-precision display, and is a new approach to introduce natural feeling
into the displayed image. This paper describes the characteristics of the
directional diffusion plate used as a basis, of multiple image separation o
n the directional screen, of the focusing lens configuration used for impro
ved separation, of methods for correcting distortion of the projected image
, and of a multidirectional picture shooting method. Based on these results
, a visual area-controlled display system with a size of 50 inches has been
designed and fabricated. It is confirmed that visual area control in two o
r three directions is possible with one screen and that image interaction w
ith a feeling of presence can be realized with a three-screen configuration
