In the Urgonian limestones from Provence of Barremian-Early Aptian age, 29
scleractinian species are described, belonging to 14 families and five subo
rders: Amphiastreina, Rhipidogyrina, Archaeocoeniina, Stylinina et Astreoin
a. The suborder Stylinina Alloiteau, 1952, is emended. Twenty genera are re
cognized among wich two new: Saltocyathus and Rhipidomeandra (Rhipidogyrina
). Among the 29 species identified, six are new: Donacosmilia massaliensis,
Paraclausastrea valclusensis, P. pulchra, Diploastraea crassicostata. Two
species belong to the new genera (Saltocyathus urgonensis, Rhipidomeandra b
ugrovae). On a european scale this fauna tends to characterize the Barremia
n-Early Aptian interval and shows a strong affinity with the Carpathian fau
na even if some of the species are also found in other regions.
