T. Nozoe et al., Successful conservative treatment for esophageal perforation by a fish bone associated with mediastinitis, HEP-GASTRO, 45(24), 1998, pp. 2190-2192
A 14 year-old man presenting with esophageal perforation associated with me
diastinitis due to the swallowing of a fish bone is reported herein. Conser
vative treatment, including starvation therapy and the injection of antibio
tic drugs, proved to be successful for this patient. Although the optimal t
reatment for esophageal perforation remains controversial, it is important
to choose the appropriate strategies when treating cases of esophageal perf
oration with mediastinitis.
