In previous work we have studied the phasor dynamics of Thyristor-Controlle
d Series Capacitors (TCSCs), and derived associated models for studying pow
er swing oscillations in a power system. This paper presents the use of a d
ynamic phasor model of the TCSC in studies of subsynchronous resonance (SSR
). Our earlier dynamic phasor models of the TCSC are further simplified her
e, and tested at typical subsynchronous frequencies. The phasor model of th
e TCSC is directly compatible with the conventional models used for the oth
er system components relevant to SSR. The proposed approach to SSR analysis
is an attractive alternative to approaches based on sampled-data models, a
nd to torque-per-unit-velocity methods. The dynamic phasor approach has bee
n tested on the IEEE first benchmark SSR model, showing outstanding agreeme
nt with more computationally demanding alternative methods for eigenvalue a
nalysis.
