The oxidation of thioglycollic, thiolactic and thiomalic acids by quinolini
um fluorochromate (QFC) is first order in QFC. The reaction exhibits Michae
lis-Menten type of kinetics with respect to the thioacid. The reaction is c
atalyzed by hydrogen ions. The hydrogen ion dependence has the form: k(obs)
. = a + b [H+]. The oxidation of thiolactic acid has been studied in 19 org
anic solvents. The solvent effect has been analysed using Kamlet's and Swai
n's multiparametric equations. A mechanism involving the formation of a thi
oester and its decomposition in the slow step has been proposed.
