A thermometric titration method in non-aqueous media is proposed for the as
say of amines viz., triethylamine, isopropylamine, n-propylamine, di-n-prop
ylamine, tri-n-propylamine, n-butylamine, di-n-butylamine, tri-n-butylamine
, piperidine, pyridine and aniline in 1,2-dichloroethane solvent at room te
mperature with antimony pentachloride as the titrant. The method was found
to be highly accurate, having a relative standard deviation of <1.0%. The m
ean recovery values show that antimony pentachloride is a good titrant. How
ever, addition of two drops of acetic anhydride in the amine solution impro
ves the titration curve and the mean recovery value of the amine generally
in all titrations. The recovery values indicate that antimony pentachloride
does not have any a steric hindrance as a titrant.
