Abstract
Biotransformation of linear alkylbenzenesulphonates (LAS) under anoxic cond itions has not been reported previously. Anaerobic bacteria have been enric hed which utilized LAS quantitatively as the sole added source of sulphur f or growth in a glucose-salts medium. One isolate, strain RZLAS, was examine d and found to belong to a novel genus within the gamma-proteobacteria.
