A bromine atom beam is produced by microwave discharge of silicon tetrabrom
ide, SiBrd(4). A complete and well-resolved HeI photoelectron spectrum of b
romine atoms was recorded using a double-chamber UPS Machine-II built speci
fically for the detection of transient species. Five peaks corresponding to
ionizations from Pr P-2(3/2) to Br+ P-3(2,1,0) D-1(2) and S-1(0) are clear
ly observed in the absence of significant contamination and the relative in
tensities of these photoelectron signals are close to the statistically exp
ected ratios. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
