The provision of new structural materials for heavy duty components for tom
orrows aircraft engines is the target of current development of Titanium-Al
uminides. Looking towards the acceptance and application of that heat resis
ting light weight material the cutting properties using modern edge tools h
ave decisive influence. This article describes cutting procedures as used t
o machine half-finished products of gamma-TiAl primary cast. Especially the
potential and the limitation of the methods to machine this material are d
iscussed.
