Sj. Reddy et al., Impact of phosalone toxicity on xanthine oxidase activity, lipid peroxidation and recovery in crab, NATL ACAD S, 21(9-10), 1998, pp. 295-301
The influence of repeated sublethal concentration of phosalone on xanthine
oxidase (XO) activity and lipid peroxidation (Malonedialdehide-MDA content)
in mitochondrial and microsomal fractions of hepatopancreas, gill, claw mu
scle, male and female reproductive tissues of crab, Oziotelphusa senex sene
x was carried out over a 7 day exposure period. Xanthine oxidase activity l
evel and lipid peroxidation showed a gradual elevation. But the percentage
elevation varied from tissue to tissue. The increased xanthine oxidase acti
vity level indicating the conversion of xanthine dehydrogenase to xanthine
oxidase. Elevated lipid peroxidation might be due to induced cytochrome P-4
50 levels and glutathione depletion leading to generation of free radicals.
During depuration the above parameters narrowed down nearer to normal leve
l suggested a gradual recovery. The results are discussed with pertinent re
asons.
