The thermal decomposition of the complexes Mg(Clac)(2)(pic)(2).3H(2)O (I),
Mg(Cl(2)ac)(2)(pic).4H(2)O (II) and Mg(Cl(3)ac)(2)(pic)(2).3H(2)O (III), wh
ere Clac = ClCH2COO-, Cl(2)ac = Cl2CHCOO-, Cl(3)ac = Cl3CCOO- and pic = gam
ma-picoline had been investigated in air by TG and DTA. The possible scheme
of destruction of the complexes is suggested. The final product was MgO fo
r the complexes I-III. The thermal stability of the complexes can be ordere
d in the sequence: I = III < II. IR data suggest a unidentate coordination
of carboxylates to Mg(II) in complexes I-III and gamma-picoline coordinatio
n with Mg(II) through the nitrogen atom of its heterocyclic ring.
