Ideas into reality - travel in the twenty-first century

Ever since the days of the horse-drawn carriage there has been concern abou t the consequences of traffic growth. But the arrival of the private motor vehicle, together with the expanding population, has created traffic proble ms on a vastly increased scale. Congestion, pollution, sustainability and s afety are the problems which urgently require new solutions. However, there is no simple, uni universal answer and the problems have to be tackled in several different ways. One of the ways, as with the problems of the horse and carriage, will be the application of new technology and it is the emerg ing technologies on which this paper concentrates.
