Phytomedicines for the treatment of different diseases have been used since
a long time ago, but the discovery of synthetic dregs, like sulphas, penic
iline and others antibiotics, disminshed the popularity of traditional medi
cine. In this work we explain why the interest on medical plant extracts su
rged again.
We describe the pharmacodynamic and the pharmacokinetic aspects of three ph
ytomedicines: Hypericum perforatum (Saint John's flower) for depression, Pi
per-methysticum (Kava-kava) for anxiety and Ginkgo biloba, for dementia.
