Results of numerical simulations of the energy and correlation characterist
ics of a multimode acoustic signal propagating in a deep-water oceanic wave
guide in the presence of internal waves are presented. The effect of multip
le scattering on the depth-dependent mean intensity of sound field is found
to be weak, excluding the regions near the depth of the source and the rec
iprocal depth. In these regions, the initial intensity peaks diminish with
distance from the source. On the contrary, the correlation function of an a
coustic signal is noticeably affected by random inhomogeneities in the ocea
nic medium, and this effect causes a coherence loss that increases with the
carrier frequency and the distance from the source.
