J. Blancou, EARLY METHODS OF SURVEILLANCE AND CONTROL FOR PARASITIC DISEASES IN ANIMALS, Recueil de medecine veterinaire, 172(11-12), 1996, pp. 583-599
From the many existing documents on the history of parasitic diseases,
it is possible to describe the practical measures adopted for surveil
lance and control of these diseases in animals, from antiquity up to t
he XIXth Century. Surveillance was based on diagnosis of and also on t
he knowledge of the conditions under which parasitic infestation occur
red. The historical facts are assembled and compared, with comments on
each of these points. Control was based upon the application of gener
al disease control measures, attempts at pre or post exposure treatmen
ts. A study of these procedures makes it possible to compare their eff
icacy and to describe the major steps of their implementation.
