A commercially available activated charcoal detector for measuring Rn-222 a
ctivity concentrations in air was calibrated with known amounts of Rn-222 a
nd examined in terms of air luminescence counts and interferences from Rn-2
20 and Rn-219. The results for conditions normally encountered indoor indic
ate that the detector is simple and reliable. The method has been applied t
o assay indoor Rn-222 activity concentrations in 387 homes in Tokyo and the
adjacent four prefectures, which ranged from 0.7 to 140 Bq/m(3) and averag
ed 22.7 Bq/m(3). (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
