The palladium-mediated coupling of p-ethynylphenylalanine (p-epa) with hexa
bromobenzene yielded a benzene-bridged hexaalkynyl alpha-amino acid in high
yield. The use of the hexapodal amino acid and of the corresponding tripod
al amino acid as backbones for the synthesis of first-generation dendrimers
based on poly(trishydroxymethyl) and poly(ornithine) compounds, developed
by Newkome et al., Denkewalter et al., and Tam et al., is described.
