infrared spectra of a solution of D-mannose undergoing mutarotation were ac
quired at regular time intervals. The spectra were first-order differentiat
ed and sequential rank analysis was used to obtain the concentration profil
es of the anomers. Least-squares were then used to resolve the infrared spe
ctra of the anomers. Rate constants for the conversion from alpha- to beta-
D-mannose were calculated from the concentration profiles. The constants ar
e slightly different from earlier reported values, while the equilibrium co
ncentrations agree well with reported values. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V
