Abstract
The complete pneumococcal genome sequence was released in November, 1997 Th is advance has been combined with new understanding of physiology and patho genesis including characterization of a family of surface proteins adducted to choline, regulation of virulence, and the regulon for natural DNA trans formation These developments in our understanding of molecular and cellular biology of pneumococcal infection will allow the development of new vaccin es and antibiotics against this community acquired pathogen.
