Abstract
Edge operational regimes in tokamaks are described using mostly experimenta l results of ASDEX Upgrade. Emphasis is put on high confinement mode (H-mod e) at medium and high densities up to the density limit. Implications for t he physics of II-mode and the density limit are discussed.
