Abstract
Several concepts of soil classification advanced during the last decades ar e analyzed. The official classification of soils of the Soviet Union, the S oil Taxonomy, and the new classification of Russian soils that is based on the profile-genetic concept are compared. It is argued that the profile-gen etic approach to soil classification is in line with traditions of Dokuchae v pedology and holds the greatest promise.
