A genetic influence in Dupuytren's disease has been mentioned consistently
in the literature since Goyrand in 1833. This article examines the evidence
for heritability of Dupuytren's disease from population studies, family st
udies, associated diseases, and cytogenetic studies. Geographic variations
in prevalence and family clustering point to a strong genetic susceptibilit
y. Uncertainties over the mode of inheritance are discussed. High prevalenc
e, late age of onset, and the possibility of nongenetic cases are features
that may complicate the identification of susceptibility loci for Dupuytren
's disease.
