Abstract
The error/erasure decoding of the RS(28,24) and RS(32,28) codes, used on a compact disc are considered in some detail. Grobner bases are used to obtai n the conditions for all error/erasure configurations that fall within the error-correcting ability of the two codes. Finally, a new decoding strategy is presented, which is based on these conditions.
