Abstract
During the past five years, the software radio has emerged from demonstrati ons in military research to become a cornerstone of the third-generation st rategy for affordable, ubiquitous, global communications. This article revi ews the concepts, architecture, technology challenges, and economics of the continuing productization and globalization of software radio. It provides a point of departure for subsequent articles in this feature topic.
