Ca. Gogos et al., Autoimmune cholangitis in a patient with celiac disease: a case report andreview of the literature, J HEPATOL, 30(2), 1999, pp. 321-324
Autoimmune cholangitis is a rare chronic cholestatic liver disease. We desc
ribe the case of a 65-year-old woman with celiac disease who presented to u
s with fever, jaundice and weight loss. Serum biochemical study showed mark
ed increase in alkaline phosphatase and gamma GT levels. Antinuclear antibo
dies were positive, while antimitochondrial and anti-smooth-muscle antibodi
es were negative. Liver biopsy was compatible with primary autoimmune chola
ngitis. The patient was successfully treated with azathioprine and methylpr
ednisolone. We describe here the uncommon association of autoimmune cholang
itis with celiac disease and review the prevalence of liver diseases in pat
ients with celiac disease.
