G. Torrado et al., Quantitative determination of dimethicone in commercial tablets and capsules by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and antifoaming activity test, J PHARM B, 19(3-4), 1999, pp. 285-292
Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and antifoaming activity tes
t have been employed for the quantitative analysis of dimethicone. Linearit
y, accuracy and precision are presented for both methods. These methods hav
e been also used to compare different dimethicone-containing proprietary me
dicines. FTIR spectroscopy has shown to be adequate for quantitation of dim
ethicone in commercial tablets and capsules in order to comply with USP req
uirements. The antifoaming activity test is able to detect incompatibilitie
s between dimethicone and other constituents. The presence of certain enzym
es in some medicinal products increases the defoaming properties of these f
ormulations. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
