In nuclear reactions the radii of the fragmentation volume obtained wi
th Bose-Einstein correlations reflect the effective radius of the proj
ectile. However, according to the phenomenological parametrizations of
the effect, the Compton wavelength scale of the meson is actually ext
racted. We propose a solution to this puzzle and conclude that in heav
y-ion collisions Bose-Einstein interference does allow the spacetime d
escription of the fragmentation region.
