Abstract
Mass A approximate to 90 nuclei with several valence nucleons outside the d oubly-magic Sn-100 core are an ideal testing ground for the validity of the spherical shell model. Electromagnetic decay properties as well as magneti c dipole moments of excited states are the key quantities revealing the str ucture of the wave functions and the mechanisms responsible for strong dipo le sequences. The present article discusses by means of two examples the ad vantages of employing the most recent developments both concerning detector technology and experimental methods.
