The design, fabrication, and characterization of an optical, noncontact mic
rosystem for the measurement of torque on a drive shaft are described. The
heart of the system consists of a glass integrated optical interferometer c
hip; ball lenses are used for collimation of measurement beams onto reflect
ors embedded in the shaft. The system requires no contact with and only min
imal modification of the drive shaft. (C) 1999 Society of Photo-Optical Ins
