We describe how an evolution strategy is used to automate the design of lum
inaire reflectors, in particular, we outline a computer simulation, consist
ing of a 2-D optical reflector with point light source, which is implemente
d for this purpose. The reflector shape is modeled using a Bezier curve rep
resentation, and photometric distributions are calculated in the near, midd
le and far fields using a ray-tracing approach. The automation of the desig
n process is achieved through the use of a novel evolution strategy, termed
differential evolution. For the effective operation of differential evolut
ion, a merit function specific to luminaire reflector design is presented.
Finally, we describe our investigation into the validity of the evolution s
trategy approach to reflector design. Based on our results, we propose that
the technique is not only valid but also feasible. (C) 1999 Society of Pho
