Eighteen indigenous plants are reported (with their Xhosa and English verna
cular names) which are commonly used in the traditional medicine of the Tra
nskei region of South Africa, for the treatment of digestive tract disorder
s. Most vegetative and reproductive parts of the plants are used for the pr
eparations. In spite of western civilization the great majority of the peop
le in Transkei still strongly believe in the efficacy of herbal medicine.
