A new compound YbFe4Sb12 was synthesized by reaction sintering. It belongs
to the family of ternary filled skutterudites. The crystal structure was de
termined from single crystal X-ray counter data: LaFe4P12-(skutterudite)-ty
pe, space group Im (3) over bar-T-h(5) No. 204, Z = 2, a = 0.91571(5) nm; r
esidual values: R-F = 3.0, wR = 6.9, GOF = 1.316. Magnetic susceptibility a
nd magnetization data assisted by Fe-57 Mossbauer and XAS spectra revealed
that the compound is a Curie-Weiss paramagnet down to 1.7 K, only due to ma
gnetic moments carried by the Yb atoms exhibiting an intermediate valence s
tate. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
