C. Yamashita et al., Mild hypothermia for temporary brain ischemia during cardiopulmonary support systems: Report of three cases, SURG TODAY, 29(2), 1999, pp. 182-185
Recovery without residual neurological damage after cardiac arrest with tem
porary cerebral ischemia is rare. Therefore, it is most important that ever
y effort is made to prevent brain damage occurring immediately after succes
sful cardiopulmonary resuscitation, We report herein the cases of three pat
ients who suffered either cardiogenic or hypovolemic shock and were resusci
tated by a cardiopulmonary support sq stem followed by mild hypothermia. Al
l three patient, recovered completely without any neurologic damage. The ou
tcomes of these three patients demonstrated that mild hypothermia may be im
portant for cerebral preservation after cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
