In this paper, an oil-soluble rare earth compound, cerium diocytl dith
iocarbamate, was synthesized and used as an antiwear and extreme press
ure additive for lubricating oils. Its tribological performances were
evaluated with a four-ball machine and a ring-on-block rig. In additio
n, surface analyses with Auger electron spectroscopy and X-ray photoel
ectron spectroscopy were also conducted to study the surface film form
ed by the additive under boundary lubrication conditions. The test res
ults showed that the additive exhibited good friction-reducing ability
and antiwear property and excellent extreme pressure performance. Sur
face analyses further disclosed the coexistence of organic film, oxida
tion film, chemical reaction film and diffusion layer on the rubbing s
urface.
