The surface pressure-molecular area and surface potential-molecular ar
ea isotherms for mixed monolayers of valinomycin and dipalmitoylphosph
atidylethanolamine (DPPE) or dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DOMA
) at various aqueous salt subphases were measured. Specific interactio
n of valinomycin in the monolayers of both lipids with K+ as compared
to Na+ from the aqueous subphase was found. The head groups, positivel
y charged (DOMA) and zwitterionic (DPPE), respectively, of the lipids
influence the cation binding ability of valinomycin at the interfaces.
