The relationship between metacognitive competence and memory performan
ce was studied in a sample of n = 241 adults using complex and every-d
ay like learning material. The main result showed only low correlation
s between the accuracy of predictions and performance on the learning
test. In addition, it was found that the effect is sensitive to the ty
pe of learning materials and to operationalization differences. The me
mory promoting effect of knowing one's weaknesses turns out to be very
context dependent.
