Child labour has been discussed mainly within the context of the economical
ly underdeveloped countries. In reporting British research findings the art
icle challenges this bias and argues that child employment is evident withi
n the developed countries, but that it has become largely 'invisible'. It i
s argued that by researching child workers in the developed countries, our
understanding of this phenomenon globally will be enhanced. This is discuss
ed with reference to the positive and negative effects of employment, chall
enges to the child labour/child work dichotomy, and the debates about the u
nderlying causes of employment among children.
