The time dependent thinning of liquid films on a mica substrate has been ex
amined. Aqueous solutions of glycerol, with and without potassium chloride
present, were used to form the liquid film. The results were examined in th
e light of the Reynolds' equation for hydrodynamic thinning. Several featur
es of the results were as predicted by the equation but the viscosity of th
e liquid in the film was found to be larger than the bulk value. (C) 1999 E
