Abstract
Haplotaxodon trifasciatus, a new cichlid fish, is described on the basis of 12 specimens from Lake Tanganyika. It is distinct from its only congener, H. microlepis, in having six or seven scale rows between upper and lower la teral lines (five rows in H. microlepis), three vertical bands on body belo w base of dorsal fin (four bands), and usually 34 vertebrae (35-36).
