The dissociation kinetics of the Fe-2(mu-OH)(2)(H2O)(8)(4+) complex was stu
died in aqueous solution at 25.0 degrees C, 1.0 M NaClO4, and pH < 3.0, by
the slopped-flow method. A mechanism involving the following three pathways
is proposed: (I) Fe-2(mu-OH)(2)(H2O)(8)(4+) reversible arrow 2Fe-(OH)(H2O)
(5)(2+); (II) Fe-2(mu-OH)(2)(H2O)(8)(4+) + H+ reversible arrow Fe-(OH)(H2O)
(5)(2+) + Fe(H2O)(6)(3+); (III) Fe-2(mu-OH)(2)(H2O)(8)(4+) reversible arrow
Fe-2(mu-OH)(2)(OH)(H2O)(7)(3+) + H+; Fe-2(mu-OH)(2)(H2O)(7)(3+) reversible
arrow Fe(OH)(H2O)(5)(2+) + Fe(OH)(2)(H2O)(4)(2+).
