There is a growing body of evidence that theory-based behavioral interventi
ons can effectively reduce risky behaviors that can lead to the acquisition
and transmission of STDs/HIV. Despite the substantive uniqueness of any gi
ven behavior, there are only a limited number of theoretical variables that
need to be considered in any attempt to produce behavior change. These var
iables are identified and two multi-site studies are described to illustrat
e how these variables can be used to guide the development of effective beh
avior change interventions in both community and clinic settings. (C) 1998
