Micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) and flow-counterbalanced MEKC
separations of phenylalanine isotopomers are demonstrated. Using MEKC in a
n untreated, bare, fused silica capillary, tetramethylrhodamine derivatized
phenylalanine can be baseline separated from derivatized phenylalanines wi
th five (aromatic ring) and eight (aromatic ring, alpha and beta carbon) de
uteriums in 3.25 min. In addition, a mixture of phenylalanine isotopomers,
synthesized through a partial deuteration of the amino acid's aromatic ring
, was separated using flow counterbalanced MEKC (FC-MEKC). In these separat
ions, phenylalanine isotopomers which differ by only one or two neutrons we
re partially resolved. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
