Electrochromatography is one of the newest chromatographic methods. This pa
per reports an evaluation of thin-layer electrochromatography on silica gel
and aluminum oxide, two of the most popular adsorbents, with a strong homo
genous electric field and the monocomponent organic mobile phases usually u
sed in adsorption chromatography, The electric field influenced the migrati
on velocity of mobile phases and the chromatographic parameters of chromato
graphed substances. The influence was greater on the cathode side than on t
he anode side, with the result that mobile phases and chromatographed subst
ances migrated faster on the anode side than on the cathode side. The diffe
rences were not great for weak and strongly polar solvents. The influence o
f an homogenous electric field on the migration velocity of the mobile phas
e and the chromatographed substances on the cathode side was most evident f
or ethyl methyl ketone and ethyl acetate.
