The synthesis and structure of the gallium dithiocarbamate, GaCl2(4-mepy)(2
) (S2CN(CH3)(2)), is described. Tetramethylthiuramdisulfide, (CH3)(2)NC(S)S
-S(S)CN(CH3)(2), reacts with Ga2Cl4 in 4-methylpyridine at 25 degrees C to
form a new gallium(lll) dithiocarbamate. The gallium(lll) dithiocarbamate,
GaCl2(4-mepy)(2)(S2CN(CH3)(2)), exists in the solid state as a distorted-oc
tahedral molecule in which the chloride ions are cis to one another and tra
ns to the sulfurs of the dithiocarbamatedisulfide ligand. The compound crys
tallizes in the P (1) over bar (No. 2) space group with a = 9.0863(11) Angs
trom, b = 9.2030(13) Angstrom, c = 14.0530(20) Angstrom, alpha = 81.55 (1)d
egrees, beta = 73.93(1)degrees, gamma= 60.82(1)degrees, Z= 2, V (Angstrom(3
)) = 985.80(20), R-F = 0.055 and R-w = 0.052.
