Abstract
Fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have been used to monitor the axial and r adial strain induced in a 30 mm calibre gun barrel by the passage of a proj ectile with a muzzle velocity of >1 km s(-1). The performance of the sensor s is compared with that of conventional resistive foil strain gauges. The F BG sensors were used to monitor transient strain signatures of duration < 1 00 mu s and magnitude up to 10 000 mu m m(-1).
