Abstract
Ion-beam-assisted phase transformation in the Fe-N system has been studied for Fe samples implanted with N at room temperature. By bombarding the as-i mplanted samples with 1.4 MeV Au ions in the 200 -400 degrees C temperature range, we have produced epsilon-Fe2N double right arrow epsilon-Fe3.2N and epsilon-Fe2N double right arrow gamma'-Fe4N phase transformations at tempe ratures that are at least 70 degrees C lower than those required for therma l treatments alone. Comparison with previous results shows that the energy transfer per ion to the matrix plays a key role in lowering the temperature for a given phase transformation. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.
